The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards (DSS) is a mandated set of security standards agreed upon by the five major credit card companies: VISA, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and JCB. These PCI standards were developed to protect consumers by ensuring that personal information remains secure and also reducing the risk of identity theft and fraudulent credit activity. Any Department of School which processes, stores or transmits credit card information must comply with PCI standards. Failure to comply may result in the organization’s loss of credit processing privileges. If your Department/School would like to begin accepting credit cards, please contact the University of Miami’s Treasury Department (see Resources for contact info).
